The six “pillars” of the Medical Service

The Medical Service is charged with promoting and maintaining the health of the University’s employees. The Medical Service advises TU Berlin and its employees on necessary measures for occupational protection. This includes:

• Design and furnishing of workplaces

• Physical, chemical, and biological effects

• Design, selection, and use of working tools, in particular working materials, machines, devices, and facilities

• Design of methods, work flows, and working time

• Use of personal protective equipment

Depending on the health dangers in their workplace, staff have the possibility of an occupational health consultation. The content and results of this consultation and the preventative occupational medical measures remain confidential. The physicians in the Medical Service play a role in the planning and implementation of occupational health promotion. The Medical Service offers consultation on employing persons particularly in need of protection (e.g. youth, pregnant women, and severely disabled persons), reintroducing employees to professional life after a long period of illness, travel medicine, vaccinations, the organization of first aid, and first aid services in the event of acute illness or accidents. Our occupational physicians work with safety engineers, the Social Service, the staff councils, the Support for Staff with Disabilities, and other representatives of areas of employment at the University.
